From diesel engines to AI.

For three and a half years I kept diesel and gas generator sets running as a field service technician at Borusan Cat. Now my focus is AI for heavy industry — field service, power generation and heavy equipment — using whatever fits the job, from frontier cloud models to fully offline systems on your own hardware.

Who is Gökhan Çalkap?

Kadir Gökhan Çalkap is an applied AI specialist based in İzmir, Türkiye. After working as a field service technician on Caterpillar, Olympian and MWM generator sets at Borusan Cat, he now focuses on AI for industrial operations and develops apps and games under his studio, Calkap Labs.

Where I’m different

I learned on engines, not in a classroom.

  1. 01

    Field first.

Three and a half years on site with generator sets — Caterpillar, Olympian, MWM — often with a customer’s operation stopped and waiting. Read the symptoms, form a hypothesis, test it, don’t guess. I build AI the same way.

  2. 02

Any AI, in the right place.

Frontier cloud models when they fit; open-weight models on your own machines when the data can’t leave the building. Agents, retrieval over private documents, image and 3D generation — I use what the job needs.

  3. 03

From idea to a physical part.

SolidWorks and Fusion 360, AI 3D generation and years of 3D printing. Shapes I couldn’t model by hand I can now generate, print and hold.

AI for heavy industry

I know where the hours go on site.

Generator sets, construction machinery, heavy industry. I’ve done the work AI is supposed to help with, so I know which parts are worth automating — and what a technician will actually use.

  • Service manual & fault-code assistant

Technicians ask in plain language on site. Answers come from your own manuals, service bulletins and past reports, with the source page shown.

  • Service reports without the paperwork

Voice notes and photos from the job become a finished service report and checklist, in the format your customers already expect.

  • AI that works offline

Models running on a laptop or a server inside your plant: no internet needed on site, and no data leaving the building.

  • Engineering & CAD workflows

Automating drawing and cutting preparation. CutFlow, an AutoCAD plugin for laser-cutting shops, came out of this work.

Idea to part, offline

If it can be imagined, it can be printed.

My own workflow, running entirely on a laptop with no internet: from a sentence to a part I can hold.

  1. 01

    Idea

    A sentence, a sketch or a need.

  2. 02

    Spec

A local LLM turns it into a precise description.

  3. 03

    Image

Concept renders, edited until they’re right.

    Qwen Image 2.1
  4. 04

    Four views

Front, side, top and perspective — the technical-drawing habit.

    Qwen Image 2.1
  5. 05

    3D model

Generated from the views and cleaned up.

  6. 06

    Print

Sliced and printed: a real part.
